Physically is the Nexus 5 bigger or smaller than the Nexus 4?

Have the hardware specs of the Nexus 5 leaked? I know it has a 4.95" screen, but I was wondering how the overall dimensions of the Nexus 5 compares to the Nexus 4.

The Nexus 4 is just about the max size I want to go with a phone (width & height), so I am hoping the Nexus 5 packs a bigger screen is a similar form factor.

That information I don't think has been leaked. I would venture as to say that the device size is likely a little bigger, but not by much.

The Nexus 5 is 131.9 x 68.2 for area of 8,995.58 mm vs the 133.9 x 68.7 for an 9,198.93 mm area of the Nexus 4.

I don't think the dimensions posted in the FCC document are correct. You can calculate the exact size of the screen based on the 4.95inch diagonal and the confirmed 16:9 aspect ratio. And if you line up the leaked render from google (which I'm assuming is official) there is simply no way that the Nexus 5 is 131.9mm tall. My best estimate is: H: 136.4mm, W: 68.2mm, thickness 8.7mm. So approximately the same height as a galaxy s4/s3 but narrower and thinner than the old Nexus 4. This is based on making some measurements in Adobe illustrator. Not exact but again I think it is physically impossible based on the leaked render for the Nexus 5 to be smaller in every dimension than the nexus 4.

If the dimensions came from the FCC document, why do you think it came from a leaked render? Doesn't the FCC document all but confirm it?

I found this article btw: Slimmer bezels mean Nexus 5 will have larger screen but smaller size than Nexus 4 | 9to5Google

What I'm saying is that the official leaked render that came from the Google play store does not match the dimensions that the FCC posted. The FCC doesn't need to have the dimensions of the phone be correct. They need things like frequencies and interference to be correct. They probably quickly measured a test device with those cheap looking rulers we saw in one of the FCC photos and jotted down a number rather than getting the measurements straight from LG. I too was hoping that the FCC dimensions were correct as I want the Nexus 5 to be as small as possible but I don't think that is the case. I would love to be wrong of course. Hopefully we don't have to wait much longer for the official specs!

Also the link you posted to doesn't use the correct aspect ratio in their calculations. They're going by the reported in software resolution which doesn't include the navigation buttons. The true resolution of the screen is 1920x1080 not 1776x1080.

What the software (and therefore the FCC) reports the screen resolution to be has zero impact on the FCC's ability to measure the external dimensions of the phone (which they would want to record accurately BTW). Samsung squeezed a nearly 5" screen in a body the size of the S3, why is it so unbelievable that LG got a similar screen in a body slightly smaller than last year?

With a .25" increase in screen size from the Nexus 7, it's not difficult at all to get it 2mm shorter in length and .5mm thinner in width with bezel reductions, primarily on the top/bottom of the device. The 2mm is almost entirely coming out of the top bezel (it's seriously tiny) and the difference in width is only 1/4 of a millimeter on each side. That's not difficult to beleive at all.

Not trying to be argumentative. Like I said hopefully we'll know more soon. I was just eager to know the overall size of the phone (because that matters to me) and so I resized the leaked render of the Nexus 5 that came out via the Play store until the screen size was correct for a 4.95" diagonal and then I measured the outside dimensions of the phone (in adobe illustrator) and I got a height that was quite a bit taller than the 131.9mm height stated in the FCC doc. The Google released render could be wrong I suppose but both of them can't be right. If you don't believe me try it yourself. I'd love to have someone double check my calculations! (I mean that seriously not joking).

Okay, so the geometry...

The screen size increases by .25" diagonally by increasing slightly less than 6mm tall and 2mm wide. The size bezels reduce from around 2.55 on each side of the screen to about 1.36mm on each side and the top and bottom bezels decrease by nearly 7.9mm from 32.14 to 24.24 in total veritcal. The net gain in height is 7.8973 less 5.8973 mm for 2mm total shorter and the net gain in width is 2.3674 less 1.8674 mm for .5mm total, which matches perfectly with the FCC dimensions.

The aspect ratio though isn't a perfect 16:9. The Nexus 4 was really close to 16:10 (16:9.999988207523990...) while the Nexus 5 is 16:9.73 (16:9729736357379120...), which seems to indicate that the pixels are not identically spaced along the length to the spacing along the width if we're going to assume 1920x1080, however if we assume that the specs are correct as listed, 1776 x 1080, then the spacing becomes correct, the ratio matches up to 5 decimal places in (16:9.729729729729730), literally only .00000064 difference, or 99.99934% correct, and all the math checks out.

I think you are misunderstanding me. I am not saying it is physically impossible to fit the 5" (4.95") screen in a phone that has dimensions that the FCC reported. I also checked that when that leak first came out. What I am saying is have people actually looked at the Google press release image and tried to match that up with the measurements we have thus far?

Also I did not consider the possibility that the aspect ratio might not be exactly 16:9 (although the Nexus 4 has an aspect ratio of 15:9 not 16:10) but yes that is a good point and could throw things off for sure.

Based on the math of the actual screen dimensions, I'd be very surprised if it was 1920x1080. Where was it confirmed that it's 16:9?

Good point, I had to extrapolate that one based on screen size and the hypotenuse of approx 120 mm, but in resolution you're correct. So a 1776x1080 is a 15:9.12 and fairly similar, while 1920x1080 is obviously 16:9, a straight 15:9 would be 1800. That would also lend credence to something much more in the 15:9 range than a full 1920 device.

Yeah i have been wondering about the actual dimensions of the device since the first pictures. I own an HTC One X, so i'm compairing the N5 to it.
Take my HOX: 134.4 x 69.9 in dimensions, 4.7 screen and very little of that bezel. Then theres the pictures of N5 with dimensions of 131.9 x 68.2 and a screen of almost 5 inches having what seems very similar bezel on the sides, top and bottom. For me it just doesn't add up.

More evidence that the FCC dimensions are wrong and the Nexus 5 will (unfortunately) be larger at least in height than the Nexus 4. Some of the Nexus 5 cases from spigen are shipping already and someone on G+ put a Nexus 4 into the Nexus 5 case (I'm trusting that a company like Spigen would have the correct dimensions for the Nexus 5) The Nexus 4 fits with quite a bit of wiggle room on top and bottom. The sides are more difficult to tell. Kind of disappointed by this. I really hope the Nexus 5 won't be too big...

That is pretty incriminating. :disappoint:

Good find so looks about the same dimensional while being a little taller. Works for me

If it is taller than reported I wont be disappointed. I like phones that look taller and slender. The dimension I hate is width. They are getting too wide. Slimmer but taller is the right tradeoff to me.

I agree with you most of the time but I still need to hold it in my hand before I know for sure. Every phone fits in my hand differently. This is why we got choice. :)
