The N4 was not really recessed...it's cover was the back glass, which itself could be scratched (mine is). The Nexus 5's is not recessed either, but I have a case on mine, which does recess it.

Yes I know the N4 lens was not recessed...I was saying that with a case...like the Rearth Ringke...the lens (which of course is flush with the glass back of phone) was recessed. But with respect to the N5...what are your impressions on the durability of that glass/plastic that is covering the lens? Can you tell if it's glass or plastic? Can you tell if it's going to hold up during typical use...ie in and out of pocket or purse? I've come across one post where the glass has already cracked for someone
No specific macro setting. It is basically always on...tap to focus a close up object and it will go macro on it's own.
Just for chuckles I tried recording on my Nexus 5 a track from a band I went to see Saturday. Small club, I was standing towards the back and the lighting was very poor (from a recording standpoint). The sound was much better than I would have gotten with my Nexus 4, but obviously the video leaves a bit to be desired. Notice how the Nexus keeps trying to refocus. ...Surf on....
Even though I'm mostly against using digital zoom, it may have helped in this case. There's so much foreground stuff to mess up the focus (and also distract the viewer).
Some low light shots are not as in focus as I'd like...but maybe I am just too demanding. Part of the problem is that HDR mode ignores my tap-to-focus. It will ALWAYS focus on the center of the image, even if it reacts to your tap. It's annoying.
Also, illuminated signs seem to get washed out to pure white, even if I focus on them deliberately. Note the sign by the stoplight in the 2nd picture (looks like two white squares in the middle on the right).
Did you see the iPhone macro shot above? Holy crap, the Nexus just kills the iPhone on macro shots. The text on that Starbucks cup is clear as can be. Click on the image to see the full version. If you look closely enough you can probably see the molecules in the paper.

After seeing all those comparisons I'm definitely happy. It may not have the fastest shutter and focus, but I'm happy .
There are some really nice shots here! I'm really happy to see that any focus issues are software side. This camera should be a respectable shooter with a bit of tweaking.
Question: is there a way to adjust the size of images taken in the camera app? I'm noticing many of the images I take in the main camera app are showing up as less than 1MB. This doesn't make sense to me given the sensor size on the camera, which is identical to that on the iPhone 5 and those images come in somewhere between 2 and 3 MBs.
So what's the best way to increase the speed of the shutter. It's driving me crazy that I keep missing shots of my baby daughter smiling b/c the camera like 2+ seconds after I take a pic before it actually captures an image.
