Maybe I'm misunderstanding. By "speed dial," you're talking about pressing a number on the phone dialer and it dials the contact? If so, how about just adding the contact to one of your home pages and just touching the picture to dial? I believe you can do that by bringing up your full contacts list, bringing up the one you want to add, hitting the menu for that entry, and Place on Home Page. My wife's got the Nexus 5, so that's from memory.

Also, what about just saying "OK Google. Call Joe Bag o' Donuts?"

I know this is an old thread but the answer is the voice dial (as has been posted) or....
the direct dial widget which you can add to any home page.

Press and hold on a home page, select widgets, find direct dial and press, select a contact (so be sure the contact you want is created) and the widget appears on the home page. I assume you can move it around. They are small but no way will you fit 99 on the home pages.....but who knows 99 speed dial names anyway?

Good Luck.
