I can install whatsapp, but KitKat is not giving me the option to make it my default sms, it only lists hangouts. Does anyone have a fix?

Re: Need Help Making Whatsapp my default SMS

Whatsapp is a cross platform messaging service. It is NOT an SMS service. It doesn't send text message, but instead uses your internet connection to send messages to other whatsapp users.

Unless they've changed something, you won't be able to send SMS with whatsapp.

i have the same problem.
I don't know if it's the right thread because of the title "SMS" but I suppose this guy like myself don't care if it's sms or internet message

i don't care if it's sms or internet. i want to send a message through whatsapp... directly from the phone app log or from the contacts.
but android (or samsung ) only allow to select from sms or hangout...
it used to allow a selection from any messenger app's and not anymore.

i have an S5 and i'm quite disappointed about this issue.

i have even tried another phone app but same behavior...
i have read many logs about this issue and all get closed with the same answer: whatsapp can't send sms... but it can send messages and i want to send a message...

Please help!!! i never bought an iphone and i suppose i will have the same issue there too :-)
Thx for your time and sorry for the tone... i'm really upset about this new "functionality" :-(

Again, like the second poster said, WhatsApp is a messaging app, NOT a SMS app. WhatsApp uses data to send messages, not your text messaging plan.

Exactly, and it can only send messages to other WhatsApp users. It can't be set as a SMS app, because it's not a SMS app.

Hi, could you resolve your problem?? I´m having the same issue, i used to have an s# in which whatsapp was the default for messaging directly from my contacts or the call logs. And with the s5 i cant seem to do it and its frustrating. U got any help?

You need to learn to read before posting irrelevent information.

The issue at hand is, on an Android Phone, you have a contact, and when you want to message the contact, it prompts you to use messaging, wattsapp or other messaging client, once selected its fixed, so even though you want to send an sms and wattsapp can not, there is no option to switch back to sms.

Figured a way. Not to make Whatsapp the default messaging app, but to send Whatsapp message directly from contact or call log.
Click on the contact > click view contact > click Whatsapp logo (under connections tab). This will bring you to the Whatsapp app, ready to send a message to the contact.
