Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions in this thread. A few weeks ago, I moved from iOS to Android and got a Nexus 5. For the first few days, it was fine, and then I had the same kind of crazy battery drain as the OP. I didn't go crazy with customization, so it was pretty puzzling. I tried nearly everything in this thread, then tried the list of things suggested by Google's tech. The problem still happened, so they sent me a new phone. Same problem.

I wasn't willing to disable the hell out of everything, as that kind of defeats the purpose of having a phone I enjoy and want to use, so I started by turning off Google Now. That completely solved my issue (I realize this could be working in concert with something else). It wasn't very helpful anyway, as I work from home and know my town well, so I don't really need driving updates and such. I've gone from burning through 20% of the battery per hour to about 1-2%. Don't know if that will help anyone, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

    Cheers!

I have the same Battery drain issue after a normal use till 4 months since purchase. Few days back suddenly my phone got the battery drain issue. Till date it use to drain 3 - 4 % over night ( 8 hrs ) but now after a 100% charge before sleep the phone is dead in the morning. Also have notice the phone gets really hot near the camera area ( I assume that's where the CPU is ). Below are screenshots of 2 different days, where in Android System is the once that consumes the most battery all the time and sitting there on top of the list always.

Having the same issue. Seems to pop up every couple of days. One night I'll have 5% drain in 7 hours, next night I'll have 50% drain.

I've been having this issue randomly since getting my N5 about a month ago. After some research I see it's the camera, which Google has admitted to and will be fixing in the 4.4.3 update.

For me, the cause has been snapchat. I'm guessing the camera gets hung up and it'll easily kill 40% in an hour. I just switched to ART so we'll see how that affects the battery, but it looks like this will simply be an issue with some apps that access the camera until 4.4.3 comes out.

A friend has recommend you go into the Settings > Wifi > : {lower right corner} > Advanced > Keep Wifi On During Sleep > Set "Never". He said this can have an unexpected consequence if you are updating your apps - if the screen goes blank, it can disable WiFi and switch over to Cellular and download over cellular, eating up your data plan very quickly, even if you set "Don't download apps over cellular", apparently the check is only at the start, so be careful with this (either don't update your apps or keep an eye on your phone / increase the sleep time while you are updating your apps.)

Try deleting Facebook since sometimes people have allowed Facebook to use your GPS to track your movements so they can tell you when you are near one of your other Facebook friends. You can always get on Facebook via the Chrome browser or if it has no effect you can just download FB again. Facebook was the App that gave me a big battery drain.

I've suspected Facebook, but it never shows up in the battery list as a hugh use so I figured it couldn't be. Is it using Android system to do stuff? My GPS location is rarely on so I know it's not activating that.

I'm having a similar issue. I just factory-reset my phone on Saturday night (2 nights ago) and it was fine. Without installing any new apps though, I get a massive battery drain attributable to "Android System". From about 8:30am when I unplugged the phone at 100%, I'm now down to 36% in not even 2 hours!! The phone was in my backpack the whole time, so I wasn't even using it.

I notice that turning off the location, bluetooth, or wifi don't do anything. Turning off the mobile data seems to fix the issue, but not everywhere will have WiFi and I can't go around all day with my data off. Any idea what's causing this?

    Phone information:
    Stock (not rooted)
    Android version 5.1.1
