Problem with contacts

After a few years of owning the ZTE blade I recently bought the google nexus 5 but I am a little confused about the contacts.
When I go to the dialer app and I go to 'all contacts', my whole list of contacts that I always had also on my previous phone show up, I assume from my SIM card. I was looking for the contacts app on the phone and I assume 'people' is the standard app. But when I go to all contacts there, the contacts that show up in dialer don't show up here. When I then try to import from SIM, almost no contacts show up on my SIM card except for a few standard ones like voicemail.
Does anyone know how I can get all of my contacts to show up in 'people' and get rid of my confusion about this?

People is your g+ contacts only....the phone app is also I the contacts app

No, sorry. But you could try downloading a third party app.
