Contact names disappeared everywhere

From the mail application (Lollipop version) I deleted a gmail account which, by chance, was the one I used to config android when I got my Nexus 5. Guess what? the account got deleted everywhere on the phone and not just inthe mail app.
I figured it out when whatsupp and Hangouts weren't showing contacts names anymore and the google play asked me to register again.
I did, with the same email address, which suddenly just reappeared in the mail app (any way to remove it safely from there?). Still can't get the names showing in both app though.. I rebooted, reinstalled whatsupp, refreshed contacts list but nothing.. anyone can help? Many thanks in advance.

PS: Just noticed I lost 90% on the contacts in the phone book o_O

Re: Contact names disappeared everywhere

You just learned that you should never delete the 'master' account the phone was registered with.

Check your contacts online. If 90% are missing there too, this might help:
