I had the same problem on my 2 year old Nexus 5 a few months ago where once in a while when I would reboot my phone it would give the "optimising app # of #" (often exceeding 140).
It was annoying since it took a good 10 minutes for it to finish, but since it wasn't often so I didn't think much of it.

However, a few weeks ago it started to get to the point where the optimising screen would show up at almost every reboot.
It also didn't help that I had problems with my battery where my phone would shut off completely while clearly showing I still had
a good 80% of battery left.

I decided to order a new battery from Amazon and replace it. It's been 2 weeks and I've still had no problems with the optimisation or the shutdowns, so I'm assuming it was related to the battery.

I would give a shot at replacing the battery, mine was relatively cheap (20$) and pretty simple to replace.

    Hi,
I am now having the same issue! Last night, the "power off" option came up when i wanted to dim the screen (which i didnt press to confirm turn off), but the phone turned off anyway. So i thought I must've pressed it by accident. Turned it on, and the "optimising app x of x" window came up, went to bed whilst this continued. In the morning, phone was on, all fine, then immediately turned itself off again. I plugged it in to charge and turned it on, "optimising app x of x" came up again. I then left for work, phone was fine, used it for a bit, pressed the power button to dim the screen, took it out again 10 mins later and it was off! Anyway, I continued trying to turn it on, it kept flashing the google logo and occasionally the 4 little globules of colour. I was fed up so held the power button for about 20 seconds, still nothing happened. I continued trying to turn it on, and i got the android guy lying on his back with some 1980s style text below! It turned on after this. I googled and I think its bootloader mode? But how was this possible when I didnt follow the steps for it? All I remember doing last night which MAY have caused it is i tried to screenshot but it failed so I ended up holding volume down and power for a while. Anyway, I have now realised whenever I press the power button to dim the screen, it turns the phone off completely. Not sure what to do?! Help please! Am outside of warranty now Sorry for the long message guys, just thought I'd give some detail!

    I've got the same problem,
But over here it won't just reboot sometimes, it wont stop rebooting & optimizing the apps...
So I can't factory reset it.

I'm using my OnePlus One, wich isn't the most common phone I guess...

I hope someone can help me with this... because the phone is useless now...

    Max
btw i'm not used to ''playing'' with my phone or computers so please tell me in ''normal'' English

I found this thread because it started happening to me yesterday or maybe the day before. In fact its optimizing now. The most time it happens is when im watching a movie through Chromecast but never. had this trouble. Only thing major I downloaded was a lot of live wallpapers. The first time it happened I just thought my phone was updating because I noticed when I did a conference call I now see "manage conference" option, finally.

My phone started doing this a couple days ago. I turned off ambient display and it stopped doing it as often but it still does it. I uninstalled textra and reinstalled it and it hasn't done it since.

I got rid of the Google news and weather widget. Disabled it and my phone stopped rebooting.

In my case it was the power button that became "gunked" up. I stumbled on this find when my phone restarted for the who knows how many times, and I just started hitting it on my desk. I was hitting it with the phone turned sideways (horizontally perpendicular) and the power button facing down toward the edge of the desk. I did this a few times, started my phone back and haven't had a problem since. I didn't wipe any caches, no factory reset, kept the original battery, uninstall any apps. I just knocked it around a bit.

A few weeks later, I had the opportunity to verify this problem as my wife's phone started exhibiting the same behavior. I did the same thing to her phone, albeit a bit more controlled, and now her phone is functioning as expected again too.

So I've been facing this problem during all weekend, and I'm just about to call my Nexus 5 officially dead.

Same symptoms as others. I installed Android 5.1.1 a few days back. The phone started to reboot once and again. Since I had the "lock button issue" before, I knew this time wasn't the same thing. The system starts and tries to optimize the apps due an abnormal shutdown. After trying to optimize 80,120, or any random number of apps, it restarts again in an endless loop.

I have tried all: I wiped the cache partition, once and again. I tried to go back flashing to a previous android version. Didn't work. I tried installing cyanogen mod, and still facing the same issue.

I'm not sure if replacing the battery will do the trick, but I suspect another kind of hardware damage in my device.

If anyone has the same issues as mine, drop me a message and let's see if we can came up with a solution.

    Thanks,

    Quck update:

I removed the SIM tray and was able to do some progress. The system now boots into Android, but the applications are still failing. Can someone try the same?

I got the same problem since today.
I accidentally dropped my phone, and the battery flew out. After i put it back in it started the optimizing in an endless loop.
when i just let it run, it randomly starts over before its finished.
But when i play with the volume keys to keep it from standby (i think) it seems to finish and start up my phone.
after a certain time tho, it crashes again. and i either have to force restart or it reboots on itself. and the entire optimizing thing starts all over again!

I got an LG G4s (2/3 months old)
I dont think its due to an app on my phone, its more like a mix up in hardware after the fall.

    Can i fix this?

Happening to my LG G Stylo as well. If it does turn on when I press the power button I typically have 3-15 seconds before it either shuts off or continuously reboots over and over again. Factory reset the phone and its still persisting. 2 month old phone pretty much bricked.

I am 99.9% sure it was my case causing the power button to stick on my N6. I took the case apart and cleaned the button really well, then made sure I had it on correctly and it stopped my problem over 4 months ago. I have since sold the N6 and the new owner (a friend) has not had the problem either. I hope this helps and of course if you don't have a case on yours, well good luck in getting it working again!

Did you prefer to install apps in the external storage? Because I found out that the cause was that I was installing apps in my external storage...So I installed them in my internal storage and guess what? It worked! I have no clue why it fixed the problem... Good luck though

I found a solution which helped me to solve this problem.
my Note 4 was consantly rebooding saying "Android is Starting... Optimizing app # of #" while the phone was getting very warm.

so i put it on cold stone surface letting it cool done while doing this operation. And surprisingly it helped!!!
it was my last hope before resenting and erasing everything.

My CAT S40 does exactly the same - self turn-off in the pocket, get heated like crazy, and then start optimizing the apps at startup for some 20 minutes or more before it becomes usable again. Definitely a 5.1 issue (the device came with 5.1 preinstalled, so the issue is NOT a result of an upgrade and NOT device-specific and NOT operator-specific).
