Can't change notification sound in hangouts

I am on Lillipop 5.1. I have chosen a notification sound in Hangouts but no matter which one I change it too, even silent it uses the Europa sound all the time when a message comes in. Is it a bug?

Its ok. I fixed it. Forced stop the app then cleared the cache and data. Works fine now.

i had to allow Hangouts permission to storage in order to get downloaded ringtones to work

Just for clarification.
In the Hangout App settings you can change the sound by going into Hangout App> Settings>Account settings( where it shows your gmail).There you have the option to change the sound , or turn vibrate on or off, or show notfications on or off

Thank you so much, i was trying all sorts of weird crap trying to get it to work but what you mentioned made it work right away! (Using a ZTE Axon 7)

To change an app's permissions go to the settings gear/Apps/Hangouts/Permissions and turn on Storage.
