I purchased a used Sprint N6, after reading much info that says it's unlocked. I'm currently using it on AT&T.

Will my phone update automatically to the correct build? I've had it a week and it's still on 5.0 - just wondering if it will all work itself out or if I use an OTA if that will prevent future updates?

    Thanks for any help.

Nexus 6 are generic unlocked devices. There is no Sprint, ATT, TMO version of it. Its just a Nexus 6 that gets used on those networks.
Google / Motorola are responsible for updates.
If your device is not updating it may be because it has not reached you yet. Often times they are sent in waves. Or there maybe an issue internally and the ota is not seeing your device. Some people say clear the cache, and clear the google services or google play services and it will force it to look for an update. Also making sure its properly registered with ATT may help. Make sure your account is updated with the IMEI number of the unit.

Thanks. I tried dealing with ATT reps via chat, and I'm pretty sure they knew less about "Androids" than I do. (they were trying to say that some Samsungs will be showing 5.1 because they have "more features" - ha!) I was just trying to make sure that if I didn't get to 5.0.1, which has been out since January, that I wouldn't get skipped over for 5.1. Also, they show my device as a MX12405445 instead of an XT1103. They supposedly updated my IMEI in their system, so I'll give that a bit to see if it works.

AT&T shows it as a Motorola MX12405445 because that's how the device appears in the official international IMEI database.

Even though any US Nexus 6 is an XT1103, Motorola still has to have a way to classify them internally.

XP12357045 are devices whose IMEI numbers follow normal GSM Association standards, meaning any phone sold by a GSM carrier or sold SIM-free through general retail channels like Motorola or Google Play. MX12405445 are devices that were sold by the US CDMA carries, meaning Sprint, Verizon, or USCC.

To make it simple, think of it this way. If the XT1103 device's IMEI number starts with 99, it's MX12405445. Otherwise, it's XP12357045. Simple as that.

As for who handles updates, it all comes from Google, no matter what. However, Google will withhold updates based on SIM card pending carrier approval. AT&T has not approved Android 5.1 yet, and therefore, anyone with an AT&T SIM card in their Nexus 6, no matter where it was purchased, will not be offered the OTA until AT&T approves it. So far, the only US carriers to approve Android 5.1 are T-Mobile and Sprint.

If you have the original Sprint SIM card that came with the phone, put that in your phone and give it a few minutes. You'll most likely be offered the OTA to 5.1 / LMY47D.

Verizon must have 5.1 approved as they sell Nexus 6 with 5.1 out of the box. Also I still haven't recieved 5.1 on my GP Nexus 6 with verizon sim, just an fyi for others.

I have a Nexus 6 that was purchased from Motorola, and it has had a Verizon Sim card in it since the day I took it out of the box. I haven't activated it because I'm waiting for the 5.1 update (voLTE needed for simultaneous voice & data) I'm tempted to pop a T-Mobile Sim in it to get it to update. However, I'm concerned that it won't get the correct build. Anyone know which build is on the Verizon devices?

I have a N6 on Verizon but did not get it through Verizon. To get 5.1 I had to take the SIM out and to a factory reset then restore the phone and connect to WiFi. At that point it showed that 5.1 was available and for me to download. After downloading and installing 5.1 I put my SIM back in. The same procedure should work for ATT.

Now there are now software builds for each carrier apparently.

I just called Moto and they couldn't help at all with getting 5.1 installed. I decided to follow the steps that Thirst91 recommended (remove Verizon Sim and hard reset the phone.) The device immediately picked up the 5.1 update after the reset.

Wow... It worked, I'm on att with the unlocked version purchased from Motorola!
I did do the back up and restore so the only hassle was logging into all my apps and setting the preferences again. But we'll worth it.

    Thank you for the recommendation.
The key is removing the sim, and also skipping the Google set up completely. I did not sign into anything.....just went past all the set up screens, set WiFi, and then it popped up.

After, I put my sim back in, reset the device again and then logged in with my gmail and location services, etc.

    Perfect.....

I got the Nexus 6 from Motorola to be used on Cricket. It came with a T-Mobile sim. While on Cricket (on At&t), it will not update to 5.1. I inserted T-Mobile back in, rebooted and it saw, installed, and updated the phone. I reinserted Cricket, and now it's on 5.1.

Yeah i was reading that TMO has their own version now. Im not sure if thats in preparation to support WiFi calling or added modem cellular stuff to support their band 12 700mhz stuff.. But thats a first for the nexus line. Before they all fell under the same firmware.
