Worked for me (tho I doubt that I'll ever get much use out of it, me being a skittish creature of habit and all).

They've been rolling this out to all Nexus phones recently. My 6P isn't a Fi unit and I have the option under Settings - Google - Networking. Not 100% sure when that popped up in there, I had been looking for it since the announcement, but under the WiFi settings and not the Google settings.

Yeah this roll out is definitely being staged without fanfare or notification. I just noticed that a round of app updates hit my N6 this morning. One of the apps listed, Google Connect, looked like a strong possibility, and, sure enough, I now have a Networking tab in my Google Settings and a toggle to turn WiFi Asst on. If I ever get a hankering to hang out at a cafe, I'll be sure to check for a key icon.
