I bought a Nexus 6 on eBay to replace my cracked Nexus 6. It was listed as being used on AT&T but it was my understanding that these phones could work on both CDMA & GSM. When I bought my last N6 I had to go get a sim card from a Sprint store, and it worked fine.

The Sprint site does not recognize the IMEI and when I chatted w/ a rep on line she told me to go to a store to get a new SIM card (even tho I have a SIM card working in my current N6).

One in-store rep told me it should work if I go to a store w/ Sim cards and another told me I should just have the screens swapped at the repair store that "they recommend" for a discounted price. I feel like non of the reps really have any idea - especially on a phone a couple years old.

I really like my Nexus 6 & money is kinda tight. I don't want to spend a fortune on a phone when this one is perfect for me. Should I keep going to different Sprint stores and asking new reps? If I have a Sprint SIM card working in a same-model (XT1103) shouldn't it work in this one?

I thought all Nexus phones were unlocked to work on any network. I hope someone with more knowledge responds with definitive help. I have the N6P on Crickett but thinking about moving to Verizon so it would be nice to know if it's possible.

Nexus 6s purchased through ATT were SIM locked in 2014. I don't know if ATT ever changed that later because I got my first one from T-Mobile.

If the phone shows you an ATT logo when it boots (or plays an ATT jingle), then it may still be SIM locked, and you may need to deal with ATT (or Motorola) to get an unlock code. You won't know for sure until you insert a Sprint SIM and see what happens. If it boots to the usual Google logo, then it should be unlocked and ready to use.

And, yeah, you can't trust what any carrier rep tells you about a phone that they are not currently selling and/or being "incentivized" to sell.

It does boot to the same Google logo as my current N6. I've tried booting it up w/ my Sprint sim card but it just says "the SIM has locked. Please recycle the power and contact customer service."

Guess I'll take it to a couple more sprint stores, but it's so rare to get real help at those now days I don't have high hopes.

I posted yesterday about trying to get a N6 that was locked from Tmobile to work w/ Sprint. TMobile refused to help the original owner of the phone, and the Sprint and Tmobile reps locally said it's still locked. I called Motorola and they actually told me to root the phone and sent me a link to the Bootloader.

I haven't rooted anything since my old Palm Pre, so I'm a bit nervous about it. So, does anyone know if that will definitely work? I'll be able to use a Sprint SIM card in it after that? I saw a mod here named Maverick that was selling a phone the he said he rooted and unlocked himself, so I think maybe it is, but I guess I'd like reassurance.

No. T-Mo is the only one who can do so.

I'm assuming you mean AT&T, not TMO. TMO Nexus 6s were not SIM locked, and no TMO rep that I spoke to after I paid my N6 off, in person or on the phone, knew a bloody thing about that. I'm not surprised that reps are giving you a runaround.

If the phone was originally SIM locked to AT&T, try going through ATT&Ts online unlock request page:
