Are you talking about Google Talk within the Gmail web interface?

Or texting using a Google Voice number?

Use Google Talk to chat on your Nexus 7 just as you would in the Gmail web interface on a desktop.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do....simple to use on desktop, some reason just can't see, or click anything to start the basic gmail chat ?

Google talk chat has its own app - it's icon is a speech bubble with "talk" in it.

You need to use the talk app. Go to the settings and you will find it buried in there.

Talk? Or Messenger. Messenger in Google+ is not Google Talk, at least not yet.

This thread is a perfect example of why Google needs to unify all of these apps into on, and make all the messages cross populate accordingly.
