With the recent release of this year's new Nexus 7, Will Google keep last year's Nexus 7 updated so it will not become obsolete any time soon?

Given their track record, I believe Google will continue to keep it updated for at least another 1-2 years. After that, the OS may have become significantly more advanced such that it won't be feasible to keep updating a 3 year old device.

Like Duddy said, Google has a track record of updating Nexus for 2 years. The biggest culprit is traditionally the hardware limitations. Present new devices come with 2gb of ram, while old devices still updated only have 512mb. Android has always been RAM hungry
