After 5.1 update, my nexus 7 doesn't sync while display is off!

I used to turn on the display of my nexus 7 (2012) and all notifications from apps would be right there. The device would be snappy from the beggining.
After the 5.1 update, when i turn on the display, it clearly gets very busy updating everything. Even the clock is, for a little bit, showing the time from the last time i used the device. It slowly gets all the e-mail/faceboot notifications, etc., and after a couple minutes it's usable again. But in the beggining it's really slow, which is annoying.
It looks like there should be some setting somewhere to allow/disallow the device to keep syncing in the background when the display is turned off. Is there? By the way, i have the wifi setting to always be active. I also cleared the device cash after the update.
