Difficulty pasting in Gmail on Nexus 7 (2013)

I have been trying to paste into Gmail on my Nexus 7 (2013) 32 GB tablet. I've read through some forum discussions that talked about the problem of pasting in Android as far back as 2010. It's hard for me to believe that the problem still exists in 2013, but I've been having a lot of trouble pasting into Gmail. In order to paste, what I've had to do is 1) make sure that what I want to paste is at the top of the clipboard in Clipboard Contents, my clipboard manager, then 2) keep trying to get the two blue select brackets to appear in the message I'm writing in Gmail, then 3) keep touching what's between the brackets until, every now and then, a little PASTE box will appear, and then 4) touch the little PASTE box to paste the selected clip into my message. This seems rather cumbersome. I'm very new both to Android and to tablets, so I'm hoping that perhaps some of the more experienced folks on this forum may have found some easier ways to paste content into a Gmail message in Nexus 7.
