nexus turns off - doesn't turn on

When I had my nexus at stock, it would randomly turn off, and wouldn't turn on until the power button was held on for more than 15 seconds. the same thing is happening after rooting it too. I am thinking it is the hardware. I was reading some threads where people thought the battery could be loose. any ideas on how to resolve this? do I need return my current one, and get a new nexus?

No idea if it's hardware, but I've seen the same thing FWIW so you're not imagining things...

If it is truly turning off and not just sleeping you should have it replaced.

The loose battery was an issue with the 2012 Nexus 7. I have not heard of loose battery issue with the 2013 Nexus. As you know, when you rooted the device you voided the warranty.
