Cant "unlock" the screen sometimes

It happens seemingly randomly, but there are times when I try to unlock the screen but can't. When i try to, the display turns black and the tablet locks itself again. No matter WHAT I try to do, whether trying to go straight to settings or adding a new widget to the lock screen - it turns black and locks itself. The only solution is to power off the tablet on and off again.

Any idea on what could cause this? Or more importantly how to fix it?

FML, it literally just happened again right now, at this very moment. :'(

I should add that the screen goes black and locks even if you turn the tablet sideways (so it changes orientation)

Is your tablet brand new, or have you had it for a while and it just started happening? If the latter, I wonder if a recently installed app is causing some problems. Consider looking through your most recently installed apps and uninstalling them one by one. Another general troubleshooting step would be to boot into Safe Mode, which disables all 3rd party apps. If the problem stops in Safe Mode, then you know the problem lies with one of the apps you installed. If it persists, there's some problem with the system. Safe Mode instructions: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2852139?hl=en

I would also suggest trying a cache partition wipe, which can clear out buggy data from the temporary system cache. No personal data or settings will be lost: http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...e-nexus-7-2012-2013-cache-partition-wipe.html

It's relatively new, as I've only had it about 2 months. I'm going to try the cache partition wipe like you suggested and see if that helps. Thanks!

I have had this issue before, one time it was something with the rom itself, and another time it was the ribbon cable inside the back that connect the screen to the board which i was able to resolve.
