lost my stock"Messages" app,

I was doing some cleaning of unused apps on my 2013 N7 and somehow deleated the green icon with the smile face. Can't find it in my apps or the stock apps and can't figure out how to restore. It. Anyone have a suggestion?

I don't remember my N7 ever having this app if you mean this one:

Are you talking about Hangouts? The Nexus 7 doesn't have an SMS app (at least, the wi-fi only N7 doesn't--can't be sure about the 4G LTE version).

Open the App Drawer and look for Hangouts. If it isn't there, it's possible you might have disabled it. Go to Settings>Apps>Disabled​, and select Hangouts if you see it there. Then tap Enable.
