does my keyboard need an update?

it seems that it needs an update, it used to suggest words. but it is not doing that.

but it seems that in my previous usage, this keyboard automatically updates, so it actually looks a little different. but now it seems to have an old version.

I'm not aware of any automatic updates to the Google Keyboard; really depends on your settings in the Google Play Store.

With the 4.4.4 build loaded the version of the Google Keyboard is:
3.0.19423.1102675a

Yes, mine suggests words.
I don't use the keyboard much - mostly use the N7 for reading ebooks and playing a game or two - I do all of my forum browsing, messaging, etc on my S3 - much easier to type (I type with two thumbs in landscape).
