    I prefer flash drives to cards, but some swear products like the Leef are less obtrusive/more convenient.

    Would I STILL need a program like Nexus Media Importer using one of these card readers, or not?

    I have the Meenova and it's real convenient. I can access the files on the card using ES File Explorer so Media Importer is not necessary.

    Edit: I should note that files do have to be accessed via either ES File Explorer or Nexus Media Importer (perhaps other file explorers also support). Then the files can be selected and opened by other applications. Other apps will not directly see the attached storage. e.g., select an .mp4 video file on the card via ES File Explorer and then select a media app to play it. See here:

    Edit 2: ES File Explorer is nice because just as with the Meenova it can access files on a thumb drive attached via OTG cable.
