how good is the display on the nexus 7

I think its good. Compared to my old Samsung Gtab 7, then Nexus 7 2012 and now nexus 7 2013. big improvement.
But those are LCD so coming from SAMOLED to LCD is a big difference.

I have both an S5 and a nexus 7 (2013). The screen is fantastic. The difference between the two is that the samsung has over-saturated colors that really pop. The nexus 7 much more accurate color representation. Viewing angles are not an issue and battery life is reasonable. I'm not sure what else there is to say. If your personal taste is towards Samsungs "Enhanced" colors you might not like the nexus as much. If you are an AV geek you might appreciate the nexus and despise the S5 because of the more accurate color representation.

It's a good quality, high resolution screen. As tablets go (especially at comparable prices), it's excellent.

It is the best screen available on a tablet IMO. I looked at the Samsung tab pro and tab s and for some reason I just don't see than being sharper than the n 7. The n7 is so ridiculously sharp its impressive. I couldn't see how anybody could could say otherwise.
