Before 5.1 = Loved my Nexus 7 and very pleased with how long the battery lasted. I could watch a couple of full length movies and it lasted for days on stand by.

I'm preparing for to travel and decided to load up a few movies to watch on the plane. While I was at it, I updated it from 4.4.4 to 5.1.

5.1 is draining the battery WHILE IT IS PLUGGED IN. It was at 100% when I started the update and its now at 53%, still plugged in. I have unplugged it and plugged it back in and it says that its charging. I've shut it down and the battery % will not increase. I read a few suggestions on posts here and even did a hard shut down (power + volume down) and deleted a few apps (facebook, etc...). It charged for 3 hours and increased 1% (from 52% to 53%).

So much for being able to enjoy my tablet. I heard the 5.02 update sucked but 5.1 has rendered my Nexus 7 practically useless. Way to go Google...

Try downloading 5.1.1, hopefully that will fix your problems. The strange thing is I haven't had any problems since lollipop or 5.1 and above. Also do a factory reset. My tablet is almost perfect

Like he said - factory reset and even fresh load a 5.1.1 factory image. I did that yesterday using Nexus Root Toolkit:

Nexus Root Toolkit v2.0.5 | WugFresh

Easy to use and you do not have to root if you don't want to. I was having bad battery drain while idling with the screen off too and this really seems to have fixed that. I had done straight over-the-air updates from KitKat and as others have said, sometimes a fresh start really can help.

I have found my Nexus to be much faster with less crashes after the 5.1 upgrade.

    I'm pretty happy with it.

Got the 5.1.1 OTA this morning. Everything is snappier and much more stable now. Great update so far!

I got the 5.1.1 upgrade yesterday and everything is running smooth. I cleared the cache partition (no factory reset) after the installation and there haven't been any problems. It was running smoother and faster after the 5.1 upgrade and seems to be a little moreso after this latest upgrade. It seems most people are happy with the 5.1.1 upgrade, so I suggest you do it and go from there.

Battery drain while plugged in. I had it plugged in all night but the battery didn't charge. Last time this happened I had to reboot to fix it. All evening I charged it and it still didn't charge

The battery was much better before this so-called update. Now it goes dead much faster and is much slower to charge.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. I shut mine off for 6+ hrs and when I turned it on it was still not charged at all. Shouldn't it charge if its off?

If it is totally turned off then yes, it should readily charge. Sounds like you have either a bad charger or battery.

As I noted above, I wiped my tablet and did a fresh install of a 5.1.1 factory image. This AM I looked and the battery had dropped 1% in 13.5 hours with the screen off and Wi-Fi and Location turned off. If Wi-Fi had been on, the drop would have been 3-4%.

Another night and my battery is still where it was. I'm using GSAM btw to monitor the battery.

But all of us had good chargers and batteries before #5.

Do you know where the best step by step instructions for doing what you did can be found?

I want to get a new bigger tablet, and I was waiting to see what the new Sansung S 10" would be like. I think it's due out in a month or two. But if Android isn't straightened out by then I might look at the Ipad instead, and I never even considered getting one of them before, and I don't even know how to work them! This crummy so-called improvement update is the best advertisement for Apple I think.

It was very easy, the only real effort being reloading everything and setting it back up to how I wanted it to look. A number of users argue that you should do this on every major update but I never did. In this case I felt I had to and it was well worth the effort. I also use Nova Prime as a launcher to maintain common look after updates and on multiple devices.

Thanks - but I can't even figure out instruction step #1, "Select the correct device and build (what you are currently running"...huh. select where?

Meanwhile I've had my N7 2013 with 5.1.1 plugged in for a few hours now - and the battery has actually fell from 27% charge to 25.

Are you using it while it's charging? If you are, stop and let it charge. Most devices don't charge as quickly when you're using them, and can even lose some charge.

This battery drain is crazy. My N7 is from the first batch (July 2013) and have always had good battery life with KitKat. First version of Lollipop caused some drain, second was OK, this new one, 5.1.1 is the worst. I've had it on my charger for almost 2 hours (19%) and it's only at 50% with another 3 hours to fully charged.
And I'm having rotation issues, it gets stuck on landscape, need to reboot to fix.
Can't Google get its act together and put out an update that doesn't make the tablet perform worse?

And I forgot another new bug, the wifi going to sleep when the tablet isn't being used even though I didn't check that box in settings. Is Google intentionally trying to get us to buy the N9? I've had more problems in the last few weeks then the previous 18 months I've owned my N7.

You'll need to tap the build number 7 times to enable developer mode for USB debugging.

Just feel I have to add to this thread. Been a happy Nexus 7 2012 user until 5.0 came along, then wondered how on earth Google could push out something so bad. All the previous upgrades were no problem so I had no qualms about this one. Mistake! Battery drain during idle is dreadful, mostly due to 'android os', and strangely seems to kick in in the middle of the night. Battery saver mode makes no difference. I also have an iPad, and if I don't use it for a week then open it up its still at the same charge. Android always leaked a little battery on idle, but it was acceptable. Tried factory reset - no change. Just installed 5.1.1 (after reading some posts here) and if its still the same after, I will downgrade back to KitKat - or maybe sadly bin the device altogether and migrate to iOS. I believe devices should 'just work'. I don't expect to spend hours fiddling just because of a Google upgrade. Joining the ranks of the 'very disappointed'.
