By tapping on "< Google Play Store" in the below screenshot, I was able to get back to Google Play Store and all seems to be OK. All apps seems to be working.

Wondering if there are any precautionary steps I should take now, or how this type of situation can be prevented in the future.

Maybe this is part of the Google User Studies I enrolled in yesterday -

Those were popups from whatever website you went to. You can just keep pressing the back button, close out the window and chrome. No need to download anything.

I see those kinds of popups...erm...I mean my friend told me he sees those kinds of bogus virus/security alerts when he watches porn on his phone.

My advice would be to not click on anything you see. Not even an "ok" to dismiss something. If you can't back-button out of that mess, hit home to get out and force close your browser.

Yup, I get those occasionally when visiting legitimate mobile sites. If back doesn't work I just home it and close. It can be annoying when reading a news article and it keeps "crashing" and I have to keep reopening over and over until I finish the article. This is on my Droid Turbo 2.

As best as I can remember - when i opened Chrome the "popoup" was already opened - I don't click on anything unless I am 100% sure what it is.

These popups happen from time to time - as long as you don't click on anything and do not download anything, you will be just fine. Thank you for showing us! Those pesky ads, I tell you!

It's appreciated! I've had a few ads crop up on me too over the years; but I've yet to see the launcher one. So thank you for that!

When this pops up, I just keep hitting the back button until I'm out of it. Seems to work and my phone is fine.

"Your phone will locked" LOL! That grammar or lack of is a tip off also.
I get these once in a while also and never click on the OK. That's what they want. Back out as mentioned always. Thanks OP for a good heads up to any unaware.

Hitting the Back button doesn't always work. The offending page may continue to load. Be sure to check your browser history and delete every reference to the malware page. Also, you may need to uninstall your browser, delete cache partition, and then reinstall your browser.

You might want to go into settings, apps, Chrome and clear that app's cache.

Or you can download a good browser with adblocker enabled. Try Samsung Internet, one of the best browsers out there. It also supports extensions so you can install a few adblockers if needed.

Also found sometimes the pop up is opened in a new chrome tab. If back doesn't work, look to see if you are in a new browser window and close that. OP, I noticed you had 2 chrome tabs open, dunno if that was the pop up or intentionally done on your part.

Thought I'd give the Samsung browser a try after reading this thread and the first site I went to(android central)got the spam pop up telling me I had a virus. I guess none are immune, uninstalled.

This popped up on my moms phone today (she has a huawei ascend xt 2) and she brought it to me asking what to do. Always best to just hit the back button and never hit install on those shady popups.

Something is wrong then..Samsung Internet browser with adblock enabled doesn't give any ad popups.
