Have spent many hours with google support and they're useless. Have received a text from number in Australia and even when I reply to it message does not go through. Have tried all different networks, wi fi on, wi fi off. Have sent bug reports to google. Have sent screenshots to google support. Can call number in Australia and can send texts within USA. Phone has been replaced but same issue occurs.

Thanks for replying. Yeah, that's probably true. Google is responsible though for their contracts with carriers and identifying and resolving issues. It's not something that a user can do. Just wondering if there were any other people having similiar problems and if they were able to be resolved.

Not really -- Google just puts the phone out there with the radios to work on carriers. They aren't responsible for fixing a carrier specific issue.. your carrier is.

Like others are saying, it's probably not a phone bug but a carrier limitation (or, don't get mad, user error). So, things you can try.
    1) Call your carrier. Make sure your plan/line has international texting capabilities and isn't restricted in any way. For instance, basic Google Voice numbers can receive texts from anywhere, but when it comes to replying, you can only text back to US/Canada numbers.
    2) Try using a 3rd party messaging app. This would help determine if there's maybe something wrong with the stock app or how it is trying to configure texting. I'd try Textra since it's a popular option and you can try it out for free.
    3) Check the number. Make sure the country code is included, and this is where it sucks for some countries, make sure that the phone you want to reach doesn't require special dialing for mobile phones. For instance, when receiving a call/text from a Mexican mobile phone, most carriers will display country code and number, but try to text back or call that number (as displayed) and you'll get an error message. Why? In order to call or text Mexican mobile numbers you need to add a 1 between the country code and the actual phone number.
    4) Try your SIM in a different phone. Does the message go through then? If so, then this IS an issue with the phone (still most likely related to the carrier, but at least you'd know if it's a phone-specific issue with the carrier).

    Hope it helps.

Ok, thanks for the detailed response. Yes, my plan has international texting included for free. Yes, I know how to dial and enter the number correctly. Google support texted the number successfully. I'm not sure who I should call when you say call my carrier - I've tried the sprint, us cellular and t- mobile networks through project fi. I'll try a third party app, thanks for the suggestion.

Ah, the plot thickens... You're on Fi... Then Google (ish) is your carrier, and Fi's support line is the one you should call (and the one you're already probably I contact with).

Does the receiver have an iPhone? If so, try sending them a MMS or asking them to turn off the iMessage switch for your contact.

Yes, I'm sorry I should have said that I was on Project Fi at the start. I've spent a lot of time with Google support and their so called specialists. Unfortunately, the process is incredibly slow and they now seemed to have stopped communicating with me.
I think the receiver does have an iPhone. I'll try what you suggest.
Btw, 3rd party app was not successful. My phone does not have a SIM.

If she received an SMS from them, it was either from an Android phone or they sent the message as an SMS from an iPhone, so their phone is set up properly. (If they hadn't, the message would have defaulted to iMessage, and she's never have gotten it.)

I'm sure you've done this but just in case. Did you do +61 then the number or +61 plus 0 then the number? Try the following.

    Don't do +610298765432 do

    +61298765432

Let me know if this works ??
