In my case, I updated Google Play Services to version 12.2.17 by getting the APK from APK Mirror. Once that version was installed "Check for update" actually worked, and I was able to get the March update on both my Pixel XL and my Pixel 2 XL.
how do I get 12?

Same here. I even joined the Beta for Google Play Services last month in the hopes of getting 12.x but all I ever saw was the DEACTIVATE button. It was still on 11.9.75 when I checked for updates yesterday but for whatever reason the update came through anyway, and now Google Play Services is magically at 12.x - go figure.I did not have an option to update it, only a deactivate button.
you may need too reset the phone back too when you 1st got it out of the box
Damnit, just noticed I lost a bunch of contacts after the update. Random, no pattern to it. Why isn't the Google backup putting them back? Anyone else get this?
