I have notification dots turned on for my unlocked google pixel 2 phone. Once I open the app and view content after closing the app, the notification dot is still there. It seems like once you open the app any notification dots should go away because there is an assumption that you viewed the content or acknowledged the notification in the app.

Even if you just swipe the notification away, it should disappear (which a lot of people have complained about). The badge is a sign that you have a notification, not that you have a message. (but if you have 2 notifications, open the app and read one, the other notification may still be there [depending on the app], so the dot will be there also). (The Pixel 2 comes unlocked, so that can't have anything to do with it.)

So it the dot is still there, pull down the notifications and see if you still have one. (If you don't, that's a reportable bug, so report it [see https://support.google.com/pixelphon.../6398243?hl=en].)

And even if it is a bug, it may get fixed in a week, with the next update.

I've occasionally seen that behavior from the Verizon Message+ application, but I haven't noticed it with any others. Are you having that problem with one app in particular?
In my case it usually goes away after awhile.

The notification dot still appears even after you open the app. I'm going to report it to Google.

That's a great idea, as long as it's Google apps that are giving you grief. If it's 3rd party apps with this behavior then you should report the problem to them.
