We needed two new phones. So, the BOGO looked like a good idea. The catch? You have to add a line. But, in our case it was cheaper. Why? Read on.

First, the basics. New phone costs $799. Two new phones would be $1598. BOGO means two phones for $799.

Our family subscribes to 30G of data. At the time of subscribing if your plan was over 10G then you got a $25 rebate off the $40 monthly cost of a phone line. (This promotion may or may not be available today.) That brings the cost of a new line down to $15 per month.

So, we added a line. The phone was free but we'll have to pay $15 per month more for an additional line for 24 months. So, the real cost of the second phone is $360. Not free but a lot cheaper than $799. Thanks to the knowledgeable Verizon sales rep for finding this gem.

You'd have to check if this would work or not, but couldn't you add a line for the second Pixel 3, and then cancel one of your existing lines? Before you try that, make sure Verizon doesn't ding you for doing that.

No, I have to keep that older line for 24 months.

Man, I sure miss the days of subsidized phones. Or even VZW's "pay 50% and upgrade" thing. I guess that only applies to iphones and galaxies now though. *Sigh*

I miss the days if when the primary line use to get an early upgrade and an extra 100 dollars. That seems so long ago now.

I'm also on a legacy $15/mth per line plan. Wish this BOGO deal was storewide to combine with an Xs for the wife. Can't get her to leave the dark side...

Costs you more than $360. Unless they waived it for you there's still the activation fee, and roughly $5/month in taxes/fees on a line of service.

Probably costing you close to $500 total, still not a bad deal.

Word on the street (Internet) is that BOGO offers are getting stale across all carriers. The rate at which 2 or more people jump carriers (or start new service) at the same time is finally dropping off.

What will they think of next?
