I'm trying to find a way to automatically turn on wifi for my home and work wifi. I was trying Tasker but can't figure out how to do it. Going through settings and saw you can turn on wifi automatically to your saved networks but wifi scanning had to be turned on which I heard drains battery. Anyone know the most battery efficient way to do this?

I'm pretty sure there are other options to achieve what you want to do

Edited:. Meant to say aren't other options.

I always leave WiFi on all the time on all my previous phones. The battery drain is neglectible. Morden WiFi chips are very power efficient while idle. Really no need automate it.

Turn your screen down or off has a much bigger impact on battery life than anything else .

I agree that the battery drain is very minor. For tasker you would need to New Profile -> State -> Phone -> Cell Near -> Scan identify your closest towers. Or you could add an NFC sticker somewhere and tap your phone on it when you get there to enable whatever setting you are trying to trigger.

Believe this is the one I tried. Most tutorials show you using GPS which I know uses more power. May give this a try again.

Think I'll try the cell near profile again. That doesn't work I'll test leaving wifi on

There are usually at least 2 nearby. Gotta make sure you grab as many as possible, and it might change given the day. So this takes some follow up to get it right. I had it for a while, but stopped using it. I use the wifi near setting more most of my profiles.

PS - I'd assume GPS would use more battery than wifi scanning.

To use the "Wifi Near" action wifi scanning has to be on?

I keep wifi on all the time unless I know I'm not going to near it. I also use about 20GB of data on my phone a month, but only 1-2 of that is mobile data.

Usages sounds like mine. I'm at 22GB on wifi and about 2 on mobile. Was trying to find uses for Tasker. Coming from iPhone and iOS 12 I never had to turn the wifi icon off but it didn't waste battery. Didn't know Android could do that too. I'll look into it more. Thanks!

I use tasker primarily to modify device settings for an environment. When I get near my home Wifi, I turn off auto brightness, set media/ringer volume to 4. When I get near work Wifi, phone goes on vibrate, media volume 1. When I'm not near home or work then auto brightness, media/ringer set to 6. Also use it for plugging in headset, media volume goes to 4.

    Ok thanks.

    1) Turn wifi on when on my home or wifi and disconnect when not in range

    2) Set headphones to a certain volume when plugged in

    3) Have my phone stay unlocked when I'm connected to my cars Bluetooth

    Anything else cool!

Do you know how to setup the tasks?
1.) New Profile -> State -> Phone -> Cell Near -> Scan and select all nearby towers.
1.1) New Task -> Net -> Wifi -> Set On
1.2) New Task to be set as Exit Task. New Task -> Net -> Wifi -> Set Off
2.) New Project -> State -> Hardware -> Headset Plugged
    2.1) New Task -> Audio -> Media Volume -> Level 9.
3.) Sounds like something better suited for smartlock. Android Settings -> Security & Location -> Smart Lock.

I used to have phone stay unlocked when connected to wifi/bluetooth, but that required root and secure settings plug in. Haven't used that in some years.

You don't need Tasker for that - simply enable Smart Lock. Settings -> Security & location -> Smart Lock -> Trusted devices

So I set up the first profile and when I was way out of range it still doesn't cut off. I see this pop out on the bottom when I scan my cell towers. Not sure how to enable it. Thinking that's why it wasn't working properly.
