    Just purchased two Pixel 4a's for myself and my wife and have a boatload of questions.... here are the first from those that didn't get resolved from search results;

    • I used a USB-C with the included transfer adapter from a phone (Moto g6) with a C connector... the USB-C to USB-C included cable DID NOT work to transfer... what's different using the adapter with a USB-A cable?
    • The transfer resulted in a number of "storage-x" folders numbered from 0-3. Anyone know the logic of where the contents of these came from? (there was a sd card in the "from" phone)

fwiw, I'm going to post other question as separate posts to keep things simple.

Sometimes a USB c cable only charges and doesn't carry data. I thought the included cable usually does data, so I am confused as well.

I used the included cable with usb-c at both ends today to connect the 4a to my win10 laptop and it provided a two way file transfer connection between the two... significantly faster than a usb connection between my moto g6 and the same computer.

Now I need to take the time to map out how I want to store files on the Pixel and clean things up because of the "storage-x" folders. I will also use the usb transfer to sync a significant amount critical files between the two as well. When I tried it alone to execute the primary transfer of the contents of the old phone to the Pixel, it finally timed out and said to try another cable... so, tried an old usb-a to usb-c charging cable and the included usb-b to usb-c adapter and the file transfers succeeded.

Hot tip... if you have an SD card in the phone that the pixel is replacing, "dismount" and eject the SD card before you execute the initial file transfers... especially if you have duplicates that are both in internal and SD storage.

Since my wife needs hearing aids, I am also interested in "Live Caption" especially in the phone app, but my experience with that feature so far has been dismal. Among many other problems, it appears that the only way to turn it off after it's turned on, is to turn it off in settings, and then it is necessary to reboot the Pixel since turning it off it settings alone doesn't do a damm thing.

    Thanks for the response,

For the closed captioning, does it not work through the volume button for you? I am able turn it on and off there.

Press the up or down volume button. At the very bottom you should see a rectangle with either a diagonal line or without the line. That is the closed captioning on/off.

Thanks. The problem that I have experienced is that it continues after using that until the phone is restarted.

The big issue is that the live caption toggle control in settings has not apparent impact.

I will continue to tinker with it when I have time... thanks for the responses and apologies for my delay in responding.

I uploaded some ringtones and set and I am now using the same mp3 ringtone that I have been using for years.

On several occasions, a completely different ring tone sounds for incoming calls. As far as I can determine, that ringtone is not on the phone, in either the default ringtones or the one I uploaded...

...anyone have any info on this problem?

    Thanks in advance,

Good thought, but no. The pixel does have wifi connection and your answer makes me think that might be a factor.

This apparently happened a few years back, and I found these links which contained interesting information but did not help in this case.

Thanks again. If I find additional information, I will post it.

It's also possible to set a custom ringtone for specific contacts. The next time you hear that ringtone, make note of who's calling. Then open your Contacts app, select that contact (assuming they're already in your contacts), tap the menu button at the upper right, then Set Ringtone. What does it show under "Currently Set"?

    >> Set Ringtone <<

I thought of that and, yes I had set 3 or 4 custom ringtones on my old phone that the pixel replaced, but when I looked at a couple of those records on the pixel, they had been reset to the default ringtone... I assume during the new phone data transfer process. I have not set any custom ringtones on the pixel so far.

Also, one of the different ringtone events was from a person who was not in my contacts.

Is there any way to "see" what contacts are not using the default phone ringtone.

Note also that all of my incoming calls come through Google Voice.

    Thanks for the response,

I know this would be difficult, but I wish we could actually hear that other ringtone.

In case you're just coincidentally hearing an NFC alert tone (which can happen if something with an NFC chip, like a credit card, is up against the back of the phone), try turning off NFC for a while and see if you get the other tone again.

    >> NFC alert tone <<

I have not done anything with NFC so far so I don't know the tone.

However, you may be on to something. I downloaded NFC Test and since it's been too long to remember the tone, it "could be" what I heard. I'll continue to pay attention.

Your suggestion to put a shortcut to settings' notification logs was GREAT! THANKS!

I never knew about the notification logs, much less the shortcut to it. That is going to be an extremely valuable tool.
