I switched to pixel 4 XL from iPhone 11 pro mainly for the camera. It'd been great so far. The pictures on my 4 XL are stunning.

Looks like the iPhone 12 pro has caught upto pixel in terms of camera with huge hardware and software improvement.

I always preferred iOS and the build quality of iPhones. Is it time to switch back to iPhone 12 pro?

Only issue is iPhone cost almost twice as much!!

Based on review comparison looks like the pixel is still ahead for stills and the pixels camera for video actually got better than last years but of course still not as good as the iphone. The way I see it cameras for both ecosystems are do great now that I'd base it on the OS/ecosystem i like the best to make my choice.

I'd like to disagree. It's and upgrade on almost everyday except the process. The screen size is a preference I'd you prefer larger displays vs smaller displays. I do wish they had a model with the 865 I'd pay the extra $ for it.

Bezeless display, wide angle lens vs telephoto (preference here, but most people last year over all seemed to prefer the wide angle), more ram, wayyyyyy better battery. I guess it's a preference and you are giving up my h faster processor sure.

Maybe my wording was a bit strong i guess what I should of said for me it's an upgrade in almost everyway bc I much prefer bezeless display, smaller form factor (wanted the smaller P4 and even P3, but battery was an issue so i went with the xl models), battery matters a lot bc I take to s of photos and video since i have a 4 and 6 year old, wide angle for me is a much better choice vs telephoto and liking the extra ram.

However I do wish they had a more flagship version which I'd happily pay for to get the better processor. For me though it is worth going from the p4 xl to the 5 mostly bc of how I use the device and don't game much on it.

I also respect yours and everyone else's opinion.

If the iPhone 12 pro camera is almost on par with Pixel 5, i may consider getting the iPhone because i prefer iOS and the build quality of iPhone.

That's what I'd do if I was you. If you like the iOS ecosystem there is no need to stay on android. Also, I'd argue that the iphone 13 pro is a much better phone than the pixel 5.

Definitely good answer on your needs and preferences...

If you want better premium build yes.. But also price is different between these two devices... Lots of things to consider for all.. End of day preferences are the key words...

Been a pixel XL guy for versions 1 through 4... 12 pro max is probably going to be my next phone.

I can get assistant, maps, lens on ios now.

I really like a larger screen. The 12 pro in 4G only mode went over 11 hours on toms guide battery test, the pixel 5 went 9:59 on 60hz. I won't turn 5g on, not worth the battery drain for sparse coverage.

The 12 pro has a much smaller battery though....what a difference in efficiency.

The pro max has 3687mah vs 2800 in the pro, despite the larger screen, I expect the pro max to go over 12 hours in the same 4g only battery test. That will be over 2 hours more than pixel 5 and with a much larger and much brighter screen

The main differentiator between the Pro and Pro Max is the sensor size, which as mentioned is 47% larger on the Pro Max. That larger sensor should provide better dynamic range, better performance in low light, and overall higher image quality than any other iPhone. In fact, Apple says the low light performance of the Pro Max sees an 87% improvement over former devices.

The larger physical size of the iPhone 12 Pro Max allowed them to do more with the camera system as well, increasing the zoom on the telephoto camera to 65mm. This means that the Pro Max features a very large zoom range, from 13mm ultra-wide through 65mm zoomed. Additionally, the Pro Max uses on-sensor stabilization via sensor-shift technology, which is common on full-size mirrorless cameras. The sensor can make 5000 micro adjustments per second, and that stabilization means you can expose for up to two seconds handheld in low light. It delivers steady video as well, as expected.

I have a hard time comparing these two devices because they are just so different. They will both perform well but the price differential is just too extreme. The Pixel is a much better value unless you keep both more than 3 years in which case you make an argument that iphone gets a nod because of the longer update lifecycle. I'm not in the market for either one but I think the iphone is a better device if you can tolerate IOS and money is no object.

I don't want to stray too far off topic but I actually popped the SIM out of my work iphone and use it in my Secondary Samsung Device. I still use the iPhone on wifi with Verizon Messenger on both it's like having two devices with the same number because I can make calls and send messages from either device and still use FaceTime.

    This!

I love Apple's quality and battery life but iOS I just can't stand. I hate its file management system, I hate how it puts all my photos in one folder ignoring the folder hierarchy which I had when I move those pics from my PC to my phone unless I wanna spend days manually creating albums on the phone and moving photos into them, I have better things to do in my life. And the price for the iPhone Pro with 512GB is just absurd. I can buy a laptop and a Pixel 4/5 for that price and have a great combo.

    Well that's not true.

Pixel 5 downgrades from the Pixel 4XL:
    - Processor is slower
    - Vibration motor is substantially worse
    - Speakers are substantially worse
    - Screen is lower resolution
    - Telephoto lens removed
    - Face unlock removed
    - Soli removed
    - Squeeze for assistant removed

Hard to call the Pixel 5 an upgrade at all, unless you tunnel-vision on things like battery, which is the only thing I'd say is tangibly better.

OP it seems like the camera was the main focus for switching - if you still have your Pixel 4XL, then there's no reason to buy the Pixel 5 - the image quality is exactly the same, except that zoom is swapped for wide-angle, and I'd prefer zoom. The ultra-wide camera on the Pixel 5 isn't that wide - only 107 FOV whereas Samsung and Apple use 120 FOV, so much wider ultra-wide cameras. Other than that, as above, there are quite a few draw-backs on the Pixel 5, which I don't really get as the phone is only $100 less than the Pixel 4 was last year, but it's omits quite a lot of features and downgrades components.

So I'd say keep your money if you have the Pixel 4XL - I don't think the Pixel 5 is an upgrade, it's a side-grade at best. If you have to get either the Pixel 5 or iPhone 12 - get the iPhone 12.

I can get assistant, maps, lens on ios now.
Apple are already moving in directions that I like - allowing different keyboard/browser/email client to be the default etc. If they allow maps and a few other things to be the default, so I can just use Google's services, then I'll ditch Pixel, ditch android and just go to the iPhone. Google doesn't have a strategy with the Pixel, they just wing it every year and this year is another reset year. I thought I'd give them a shot again, but this the least happy I've been with a Pixel phone.

That's a toughie! You could always try the new iPhone and if it doesn't meet your needs, bring it back within the return window. Sometimes, you gotta hold it in the hand and use it for a bit to decide whether or not it'll work for you! Keep us posted!
