Unfortunately it's problems like these that can often rear up when you transfer data directly from an older phone to a newer one. That's definitely not normal behavior, but a modern charger with usb-c most likely won't cause that. If the new charger doesn't fix the problem, I would suggest a factory reset and start it out as fresh, don't restore from backup. You might go through all the hassle and waiting just to find out the new phone does the same thing

And you might not even get a new replacement
I was thinking, if the new charger doesn't fix the problem, you have to factory reset to return it anyway, so if it's a hardware problem you might see it on the initial setup screen... the phone would just act like you're plugging it in/unplugging it over and over. I don't know what charging notification the 6 shows on the initial screen, but you might find out from there whether it's a hardware or software problem.
