Okay to use standard chargers?

I know there are several posts about people asking for recommendations on quick Chargers and such. But I haven't seen much of the simple question, is it okay to use my old Chargers, simply adding an Aukey USB C adapter on the end?

Also, is it safe to use and old USB charger for the car and just use the USB cable Google provided in the box? Don't want to shell out $40 for a new type C if I don't have to

If the charger supplies 5 Volts, yes. (Or 5.1 or 5.2 - anything in that range.) If it supplies 9 Volts or 12 Volts (check the Output line on the charger), probably not.

I wouldn't want to risk fouling up a new, expensive phone. In the past I reused cords, charger heads, etc. without a care. But recently I've had a couple instances with sparks and slow/no charging due to not using the cord and/or power head supplied.

Thanks for the info...so if the car USB port is under 5 volts and I'm using the USB cable included from Google I'm good?

No No No. It is NOT ok. The Pixel port and configuration on the charging cord are totally different from the standard android system. You can throw out all your chargers.

Sure it is, just make sure the cables used comply with USB-C specifications. What I mean by that is that the cable doesn't have the wrong resistor in it that would allow it to indicate "Charging rapidly". If there is ANY non USB-C plug in the chain, that indication should not show. I've started moving my chargers over to USB-C, after a year of Nexus 6P ownership, but I still have a device that requires micro-USB for charging so I can't make the full jump yet.

The turbo charger that came with my Droid Turbo 2, hooked up to an Aukey USB C adapter, does show "charging rapidly" , whether it is actually charging rapidly I don't know, but it seemed to charge in a little over an hour and a half. My two old fashion car chargers with the adapter also seems to charge it okay..

But are you guys telling me that it's not safe?

Not sure...I'm just looking to charge in the car via USB not type C and am wondering if there is a "special" charger required to do that..I dont need rapid charging in the car. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

To clarify, I think he means, or hope he means, let's just add a type c adapter to our standard micro cords.

Maybe at minimum keep our regular Chargers, but use a dedicated USB to type c cord

I don't have the doc handy (I'm at work, it's bookmarked at home) but if it doesn't show up on Benson Leung's "approved" list, it doesn't match USB-C spec. The adapter you have likely has an incorrectly-specified resistor. What can happen is the phone can try to pull too much power from the power source (more than the source was designed for) and cause a meltdown - worst case scenario there.

So it sounds like I can keep my existing chargers car, chargers wall Chargers, whatever, but make sure I use an appropriate 56k ohm resistor cable?

Sure, it just won't charge as quickly.

I have the iOrangeE cable from Amazon, it was one of the first "approved" by Benson, it seems to be well made and it's nice and long (6 feet).

People are getting a little too paranoid here. Oh course you can use other charging adapters it just won't fast charge and don't use cheap crap adapters and cables. You won't blow up your phone. Power adapters and devices are regulated to allow the proper power needed.

That's really what I had to figure out. I can't imagine it can pull too much power, as almost every charger only puts out 5 volts at 2 amps or less so the issue would just be The cable I guess.

Yes, I know the whole "you spent $700 on a phone why are you going to cheap out on...". But if the same thing can be accomplished with those little adapters at the end of your micro USB, that's what I'd like to know

If you're looking at this Aukey adapter: https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Female...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5526116

This review tells me it does NOT conform to USB-C specs as it allows the phone to try charging rapidly: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5526116

Instead, look at getting this adapter that has been tested and verified as conforming by Benson. In fact, you get two for less than 2x the price of the Aukey: https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Tech...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5526116

For further reference, here is Benson's Google Docs spreadsheet developed from I'm sure MANY hours of testing: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wJwqv3rTNmORXz-XJsQaXK1dl8I91V4-eP_sfNVNzbA/edit#gid=0

In summary, it seems you're saying that it's okay to use the older Chargers, just make sure you use a newer type cable, right?
