I had a pair of ~$30 wired earbuds that began doing weird things whenever I bumped the wires leading into the control pod; this is before "OK Google", so the impact was that the phone kept thinking I was trying to voice-dial a call.
Replace the earbuds with a new set and the problem went away.
The action buttons work by using the available contacts on the jack, which are few, and therefore must be tricked to gain these additional functions; it is done by throwing a fixed resistance across certain lines. Bad headset wiring can mimic these controls, whether or not they have an actual inline control module...
I would personally get a different brand headphone b/c as stated the wiring in the headphones is messed up. I would be worried this would short something out in the jack itself and make it unusable.
