There is an android tv remote app and most TV manufacturers have a smart-tv app that allows you to use the phone as a remote.

Really? Maybe not for you.

I ended up getting a Harmony Hub so I can still use my phone to control my (infrared controlled) television and stereo.

I use it all the time for my non-smart tv and DSLR camera for remote shutter release. It's one of the bigger reasons I went with the V20, and not everyone replaces every electronic device any time something new comes out.

There is almost no consumer demand for IR blasters in phones. As a result, few bother to include one.

Now, that doesn't mean their isn't anyone who wants it, and for that person it's pretty frustrating. But don't make the assumption that your experience matches everyone else.

There are a few dongles that can plug into the AUX port... But those will require that you have a 3.5mm jack and it's at the top of the chassis.

Now, the jacks are going away AND people seem to get offended with top mounted AUX jacks for some reason..
