Google Play edition HTC One (M8) officially announced | Android Central

The new GPe HTC One ? not to be confused with last year's model, the M7 ? will offer the same top-notch build quality and internals as the Sense-based model, only with "stock" KitKat replacing the Android 4.4.2 + Sense 6.0 combo found on the standard M8. And it'll also be able to utilize HTC's unique "Duo Camera" system, which combines the "Ultrapixel" rear shooter with the second camera module that gathers depth information.

The Google Play edition HTC One (M8) will be available to pre-order today in silver, priced $699, before going on sale in the coming weeks. Here's a quick breakdown of the wireless bands supported by the GPe M8 ?

GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900
WCDMA: 850/AWS/1900/2100 with HSPA+ up to 21Mbps
LTE: 700/850/AWS/1900 (B17/B5/B4/B2, carrier aggregation B4+17;B2+17), + roaming 2600/1800 (B7/B3)

Eesh, that price is steep compared to last year. Here's a link to the Play Store listing.

It's interesting that they opted for the 32GB model (probably why the price is $50 more than last year) vs. the 16GB. The S4 GPe was the 16GB model, so kind of an interesting decision. I feel like $649 16GB would be easier to swallow.

I just placed my order. Says shipping in 2-3 weeks. This is exactly what I'm looking for. I know the price is steep, and I like my Nexus 5...but it still feels like they skimped on the quality a bit. I've been looking for a really quality stock phone for a long time, and now that I'm on AT&T I'm going to take every chance I can to use unlocked phones to my advantage.

But I do agree that it probably should be a little cheaper than $699. I read somewhere else that if you purchase this phone on contract for $199, add in the subsidies (~$480), and the activation fee of $36 you end up with $715. So it is basically the same price, just in one big sum instead of spread out over the length of a contract.
