Google Play will have the words "offers in-app purchases" for some apps. How do you find out what they are selling? It would be nice to know what the app is selling before deciding if one should install/use the app.

You might want to check through the reviews to see what users are saying about the application, or contact the developer and ask about the in-app purchases before installing.

Often times the description may give a brief insight as to what can be purchased. So be sure to read through the app information as well.

Good suggestions. The reviews will provide a clue if someone writes about it. Hopefully, the developer will answer emails, some of those apps are free apps but has "in-app purchases", I wasn't confident the developer will answer all emails due to volume of email and the app is free.
