I have a Nexus 6p and Project Fi. Can I use the sim card in a 5X as well?

To make a long story short, I already have a Nexus 6P with Project Fi. What I want to know is if I buy a Nexus 5x, can I use the sim that's already in my 6P in the 5x? So lets say the sim card is in the 6p and I don't want to bring it to work. Can I put the sim in the 5x and have it work?

TO make it real simple. Two phones, one sim.

Yep. You can just put the SIM into whichever one you want to use that day and it will connect up / work :).

That's what I thought. I asked a Fi rep and she emailed me this reply:

Thanks for reaching out to Project Fi support! My name is Sue and I'll be your Project Fi Specialist today! I can definitely help you out with your question about switching Sim Cards.

This is a great question! We are excited to welcome you to the Project Fi Family and we are excited we are able to offer you our great service. When you purchase a device each device will come with a Sim Card after the Sim card is activated it will only work with that phone, you will not be able to swap the sim cards, in the event you do swap the Sim card it will automatically deactivate the Sim card. Sorry for this inconvenience, I know back in the day you use to be able to put your Sim card in any phone and it would work, but it doesn't work like that anymore. I guess it's a good security feature also.

If you have any other questions, you can contact the Project Fi team directly anytime at 1-844-Talk2Fi. You can also reply to this email, and we'll get back to you as soon as possible! It was my pleasure to assist you.

Thanks!

I'm guessing she thought I wanted to activate a second sim card?

That's odd. It worked for me the other day going from the 6P to the 5X. Maybe they changed the process.

Yeah I wanted to make sure before I bought the 5x. I know I could return it but I'd rather not go through all that if I don't have to. I know people have gotten it to halfway work on other phones so it should work right?

I wonder if the CSR was confused by the fact that you could not use the older SIMs that some currently have in Nexus 6 phones on the 6P and 5X, that rep thought it meant, since you had to order a new SIM, that the SIMs were tied to a particular phone.
