New update changed Messaging settings - help

I did a new update on my phone this morning and hate the change it did to my messaging. When I used to type something, after hitting the end of a word or the space button, there would be a " . ! ? , " that would appear (kind of like a short cut key), so I wouldn't have to change the keyboard to characters and find the period. That no longer happens. It now shows a list of words that it is guessing I am going to use next. So annoying! How do I switch back or change my message settings?
