why is my battery draining so fast?

my 4.2.2 is only weeks old. I barely use it, many days not at all. Right from the start it wont hold a charge for 24 hours. I have no data pkg. With no usage at all the battery won't last a day and a night without being totally dead. My first impulse is to purchase a new battery, but I'm concerned it"s the phone. Can you please advise?

Welcome.

Before you need to recharge, see what your battery usage stats, in Settings, Battery, reveal. Also, if you can, touch the battery graph to expand it, to check your signal strength and awake times. Make screenshots of both and post them here....you'll have to register as a member, but you'll be welcome. Then we'll attempt a diagnosis.
