I heard this phone had good low light shooting but then i saw this comparison with the moto z play. The z play looks better in every shot and it's known to have a poor camera. Can anyone confirm how good the low light shooting is?

Better is relative. The z play tended to be brighter but significantly more grainy. The honor 8 tends to be more accurate but darker and sharper. Which one is better depends on what you prefer.

It's very dependent on the shooting mode you choose and how steady your hand is.

That's very true. The night mode takes in a lot of light but i have seen it keep the shutter open for over 10 seconds in some cases... I can't keep my hand steady for that long even when bracing it against something

I've avoided using night mode, and found auto or HDR mode work better because they don't force the shutter to stay open.
Having to keep the phone still longer is generally more detrimental.
