Can droid phones specifically HTC 10 get malware or viruses from shady sites?

Let my coworker log into her instagram on my phone and some scam toysrus_gift card thing liked one of his photos and he clicked the link on profile. Nothing happened as I was able to stop his dumb as from doing anything on the page but backing out. I I'm a bit paranoid about this stuff as recently I had my debit card number stolen and used online and that was a giant hassle.

Sure it can... But if nothing happened like you claim then you have nothing to worry about.

Droid phones can as well as Android phones.
Im splitting hairs but its educational.
Droid is a registered trademark of Lucasfilm, and Verizon / Motorola licensed the name to be exclusive with the Droid line of phones made by Motorola for Verizon. So yes a droid phone can and as its based on the Android line of operating system. :)
