Please help with contacts sync

I recently bought an Aria for my daughter. I own a Captivate and am finding they don't quite work the same. When I set up my Captivate I linked my Gmail account and all contacts synced great. Loading from either the cell of Gmail entered the contact info between each other very well. I am not having the same luck with the Aria. I have tried loading a contact to the phone or Gmail but they don't see each other. Interesting though, I installed an app called Bump on both devices I transferred three contacts to her phone, those are the only ones that show up on her Gmail account.

What am I missing here? Did I miss a step in her set up?
