Lollipop update problems 2015

I have an HTC 816 and it updated in May 2015. Since the update, my phone will not accept any kind of SD card. The phone prompt "Preparing SD Card" pops up but nothing happens. In settings under storage, it only gives the choice of Unmount SD Card or Format SD Card. I even tried putting in a new 16 GB card and had the same results. My phone is new and already at 7.65 GB out of 8 GB. Anyone else having this issue or know of a solution? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Android Central! How many SD cards have you tried? Are all of these cards purchased from well-established stores, or are they from random eBay sellers? If the cards are counterfeit or low quality, they might be more problematic.
