I'm able to upgrade to a new phone from Verizon, and I was considering the Droid Eris, but I'm not a fan of the extra $30 data plan. I've never owned a smartphone before, so I'm not sure how this works. Basically, all I need it to do is answer phone calls and I'd just go online with wifi. I've read some of the other posts about how it is impossible to do, and others saying you can get the $30 data plan, activate it, and then cancel the plan. I'm not sure how this all works (cell phones are the one technology that I have yet to comprehend). Is this possible at all, or should I be looking for a not-so-smart phone?

From what I have heard u can't get a smartphone without the data plan. I haven't tried to cancel mine but I might soon. Don't forget all 3g multimedia phones have to have a $10 data plan that you can't get out of.

I would also suggest not getting the Eris. It is not that good of a phone. They aren't even manufacturing it anymore. It is being replaced by the incredible. U spend so much on a plan and everything else its beat to invest in a better phone since u keep it 2 years. U won't regret the incredible but most likely will the Eris

If your primary device on your account is an Eris, it will automatically have the $30 data plan enabled. As far as I know, you cannot have the phone without the data plan; you cannot cancel it later. The same goes for the touchscreen feature phones, like the enV Touch - it must have either the $10, 20 MB data plan, or the $30 unlimited, in order to be activated.

It depends on the current plan you are on. I am on about a 2 year old plan and have not-reupped the plan. On this plan the data was optional. I didn't have data until I bought the eris. Even then, I simply activated the data plan on my account and didn't renew my plan. That being said, I can remove the plan whenever I want without an issue. I just choose not to as I have gotten hooked.

Definitely not possible. You can get an eris... without a data plan, but then you have to not have a voice/txt plan either.. and just use it on wifi (via ebay or another person). But that's it. I'm planning on retiring my eris in the next year or so when I upgrade and using it as a simple (but awesome) PDA for my kid.
