no alarm/timer sound... will only vibrate... help!!!

Starting today when I try to set an alarm or set a timer to go off it will not make an audible sound, it will only vibrate and flash the trackball light. The ringer volume is set, when people call me and send me text messages those sounds play just fine. I'm at my wits end and I'm extremely frustrated, if anyone has experienced a similar problem and found a solution please help. I've had this phone since it was released and I'm quite proficient but I can't for the life of me figure this out.

nevermind... apparently if you open the htc default alarm sound selector and press either the volume up or down buttons on the side of the phone it will let you adjust the "alarm volume"... this magical volume control cannot be found in any of the settings in the phone that I could find. I guess I always thought the "ringer" volume controlled it.
