Ok, I am on the verge of picking up this new EVO 3D but I'm definitely on the fence. I LOVE WebOS but I'm getting tired of the constant lag and MANY glitches. I own a launch day Palm PRE and I'm sure/hoping some of these issues will get worked out with the impeding arrival of the PRE 3 but of course, there's no release date. The Touchpad looks promising especially with the Touch-to-Share integration feature with the PRE 3. The specs of the EVO 3D simply looks amazing. I'm SO torn!

Please provide some "real" reasons to switch or not. Don't just say things like the EVO or PRE rocks!

This is a serious plea for help. Thanks!
not having to deal with the headache that came along with my pre was enough reason for me to jump ship. i also loved webos but after dealing with bugs and faulty hardware (went through 5 pres in a year. still on my first epic) it was time for change.

I made the jump from pre to evo 4G and never looked back. I was a die hard palm fan, but grew tired of all the things the pre couldn't do. Plus it's like going from a 19" tube tv to a 42" HD.

@milominderbinder - Very, very helpful. Thank you!

All of you have proven the point that moving from the Pre to the E3D is truly a no-brainer.

The only questions I have left in my mind now are:
    1. When will the unannounced PRE 3 be released?
    2. Will the PRE 3 come to Sprint?
    3. Should I wait to compare the PRE 3 to the E3D in person?

Of course, I know that no one can answer those questions yet. If the PRE 3 does not come to Sprint, then I'll probably go with the E3D. Although, there seems to be a lot of buzz about the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Motorola Photon. I have a ton of trepidation towards Samsung based on the support (or lack of) they provided some of there previous phones. (I still have nightmares about my old Samsung Instinct!) HTC seems to be on top of their game. The last Motorola phone I owned was the Nextel i730; therefore, I don't know what to make of the Photon.

I may be moving soon so that will be factored into my decision based on carrier strength at my new location. This summer should prove to be very "interesting" for us all!
I'm starting to think the Pre3 is never coming out.

    I bet they skip it.

I'm glad you found a bit more clarity, however It just seems odd you would still consider HP after 11 pages of compelling reasons not to. If you are still considering waiting to see if the Pre3 comes to Sprint and would actually choose it over the 3D or another capable device (Android or other) then I'm afraid you may have missed the point of what makes Android's ecosystem superior to HP's. But I understand Android is not for everyone.

VickMackey, with all I've experienced with HPalm, I'm definitely leaning towards Android. I just want to "see" the PRE 3 before I switch. You're right, after 11 pages of great content, I don't think it will matter too much. However, webOS does occupy a special place in my heart.

I totally know how you feel, tonight is my last night with my Pre, I'm getting a little nostalgic myself.

Just picked up my Evo 3D from Best Buy. The jump from the Pre to this phone is insane. It's absolutely worth it. While I loved WebOS, the hardware was always lacking. With the Evo 3D, lackluster hardware won't be a problem.

My Pre seems to be throwing tantrums today because it realizes it is about to be replaced. You'd think it would opt to be on its best behavior instead! I'm defeinitely making a move sooner than later now. This phone is becoming more and more unreliable with each passing day, unfortunately! It really was a good phone after about 6 or 7 replacements!!!

Let me start off by saying, Love WebOS, I miss WebOS. It's unfortunate that we all supported a company made such a great product and ran out of resources to produce that product to its fullest extent. Then you have people from HP claiming they didn't buy Palm to make smartphones. Then it all went down hill for WebOS users, especially the early adopters (Pre minus).

Got my Evo 3D friday morning, first in line, haven't regretted yet. This thing is lighting fast, I would never have thought a phone could move as fast as this coming from the Pre. I've described it as a Ferrari that makes phone calls. The stock options on the Evo/Android are options that I had to homebrew for the Pre, alot of time and energy/battery saved on this.

There is a learning curve, I'm slowly working through all of it, I've had my issues and hiccups so far, but a quick search in these forums have helped me throughout it all. It's hard to describe how much better this phone is then the Pre. I don't mean that WebOS was bad, just that the Pre was so dated in what it had and could do compared to this.

Your making the right decision, just like the many of us who already did this week.

I got my Evo 3D on friday and havent even thought of grabbing my pre since. But to answer your questions

    1. Most recent rumors are the phone is launching in UK on July 8th, Germany the week after, and then supposedly here the week after that on the 21st. But again, only rumors.
    2. Almost certainly no unfortunately. If it does come to America, its supposedly coming for Verizon and AT&T like the Pre2, which makes sense. Why would the come back to sprint after shunning us all this time?
    3. No because you may never get that chance unless you want to jump to Verizon. I was waiting for the Pre3 too, but I just had to accept the fact that my loyalty meant nothing to HP.

Honestly, all of my original worries have been alleviated by just playing with the phone and understanding how it works. Its multitasking is just as good as the Pre's, though maybe not as graphically cool as the Pre's was. Instead of cards, they go a psuedo iPhone dropdown bar with icons of what is running. Works incredible smooth with the power this beast has. Contact syncing was also a breeze, though I have to implore you not to let Sprint port your contacts. Follow this guide and do it yourself, its really quite easy: http://www.evo4gforum.net/htc-evo-4g...from-palm-pre/

I was originally going to just play with the phone for the month and potentially trade it in for the GSII, but after 3 days with it, I am sold. Sense 3.0 is mothereffing amazing and SO convenient. What I have seen of Touch Wiz doesn't look nearly as useful, or visually appealing. This phone is a beast.

I had my Pre since the first month it came out (yeah, that long). I guess I was one of the lucky ones because I only had to replace it once. It was fine for about 6 months, then the problems showed up. But even with those problems, I stuck with it, and the reward for my patience is the EVO 3D! What a fantastic phone!! I should've went with the 4g last summer, but I'm super happy with the EVO I have now!

While the webOS was pretty good, the poor quality of everything else soured me on Palm forever.

Is it worth the switch? ABSOLUTELY!

This thread reads like an obituary for palm pre...

I don't normally frequent this forum... (I'm on AT&T). But as someone who is on a network that will probably get the pre3, I switched to a phone that is definitely lesser spec'd than the evo3d (infuse).. and I'm still very happy with the switch.

I do miss the cards and flipping apps off the phone, I do miss the ringer switch, and probably I most miss the touchstone. Not just the charging but the magnetic clamping on the phone that turned it into a dock as well. I still have touchstones mounted on my nightstand, desk at work, and my car dashboard. I'm still contemplating affixing some kind of magnetic tape to my phone case to see if it would securely hold it there (though obviously it would not inductively charge no put it in dock mode). But all things considered the switch was well worth it.

I loved the palm and pre community, loved precentral (still read the site regularly). A lot of us (and this thread is testament) were loyalists to palm. But you know, it almost feels like fans loyal to a team that is in a long losing spell. If you remain loyal despite them not being competitive, what incentive is there for them to improve the situation? HP has the resources to play catch up if they really wanted to. I'm not convinced they do. If they do I'll happily take a look a few years down the road. In the mean time they'll use webos on tablets, laptops and printer panels and what not.

I really wanted palm and webOS to be all that. Right now I can definitely say they're not. You need some sentimental hygiene. I doubt Leo will lose any sleep over this.

I switched to a nexus S, and the biggest perks are:

    Actual Time frames
    Constant app updates/new apps
    something like 100x more apps
future support (and available legacy support)
    Battery life
    phone is blazingly fast
Companies involved want their phones to succeed

    Nuetral:
    Form factor

    cons:
    no touchstone
no real big homebrew community, but alot of dev's.
have to root to be good to go.

I am very glad I switched, and was used to the android OS in about a week.

While I like webOS, I am now hooked on the Android system. It is so much faster and more customizable than the Pre. Despite HP's muscle, I think webOS is doomed.
When I was eligible for a replacement in April, I got the EVO Shift. While it got me hook on Android, I decided that I really didn't need a physical keyboard and returned it. (I now use Swype3, but the HTC virtual keyboard is also very good). Because the 3D wasn't out I got a used LG Optimus S on eBay for $80, so that I could wait until Sprint brought out some new models. I rooted the Optimus and am having a blast with it, but will upgrade soon. I like the 3D but am happy enough with the Optimus that I have decided to wait until Sprint gets the Galaxy S2 and will then make a decision between it an the 3D.

oh jeez, I forgot to mention the touchstone!

great in concept, but would've been better if it worked consistently! I'm so glad I no longer have to spend time slamming my phone on that thing, trying to find the sweet spot so that it charges. in fact, in my pre's last days, i just used it to hold the phone and used the cable to charge it.

and also: I no longer hide my phone in shame whenever I go out. seeing everyone with spiffy androids & iphones, I was a lil' embarrassed to show that I was still using my "Palm Fail". Now, I'm like a proud papa!

    me=grateful htc owner

I'll say this about my pre: at least I didn't have to pay that silly $10 premium data fee. oh well.
