Problem with mail/gmail not syncing but internet working?

What could possibly cause this? My browser is browsing but my mail refuses to sync. Its a gmail account if that matters. I know there are emails that I've received that have not come to my phone either in the email app or the gmail app. Seems odd that internet would still work, no?

I'm running a stock-like 2.2 version...I think Supersprint OTA 2.2 or something to that effect.

From the home screen go to menu > settings > applications > manage applications > all > gmail > force stop, clear data, clear cache

then go back and re-open gmail, it will force a re-sync.

First maybe make sure that it's setup to sync email in accounts under settings.

Also, what happens if you go to menu > refresh from within gmail?
