"Always on Data"

Ok I can't seem to get the straight answer and my testing shows that turning this off STOPS all push email.

Everyone says to disable it, I have tried, and yes my battery life goes through the roof, but contrary to what others say, it does affect push email for me in K-9, gmail, and exchange in the stock mail app.

I have brought this up in numerous battery threads, everyone keeps saying they are getting push email, I can't be the only one.....


Ideas?

EDIT: and I have ALL mobile IM clients signed out(gchat, aim, fring, qik), no social networks syncing, no stocks, no auto news. WiFi, 4g off, mobile network, gps on.

I have found that turning off "Always on data" has no effect whatsoever *if* you are connected to wifi- to include my exchange pushed email. However, I agree that it does appear to delay the delivery of pushed emails when wifi is off. Whenever another app or service performs a scheduled data update (facebook, twitter, etc) my email gets synced at the same time, but emails do not arrive outside one of those events (unless I manually open the email app, of course).

Given the battery improvements this has yielded though, I feel this is a fair trade-off, since I don't need to have every cialis and viagra spam message instantly .

If I were using my email in a time-sensitive context, I'm sure I'd feel differently, but for the average joe (like me!) it's worth the sacrifice.

Here is what I found. If you turn Always on data off, then you can only stream music for about 5 mins at a time before the app stops streaming music. I was looking for a free player that will stream Shoutcast music and found "A Online Radio". With Always on data turned off, I had the issue with the music stopping after 5 mins. I had to hit play again to get the music going again, and predictably, after about 5 mins it stopped again. I turned Always on data back on, and it was fine streaming music.

So that seems to be the major thing that is affected by this setting.

Some of the random reboot problems go away after re enabling always on data. It worked for me and a dew other that I know.

i have unchecked/turned off "enable always on data".

1. i have two GMAIL accounts that i still get INSTANT PUSH with this setting. make sure that you DO NOT kill GTalk from running in the background. when i did this i lost PUSH Gmail.

2. i also use the "Radio Time" App to stream live radio and have no problems.

Ok but doesn't leaving gtalk logged in just keep data active, which wouldn't help.

i did not say "logged in". i said "running in the background". in other words - it's OK to always sign out of GTalk and also uncheck "auto sign me in" BUT you will still see GTalk running if you look at "Running Applications" in settings. Gmail uses GTalk as the open line of communication to Google servers. GTalk/Gmail/PUSH is fine as long as you heed my directions. it doesn't need "always enable mobile data" for whatever reason. it also doesn't need you to be logged in to GTalk - but you must let it run in the background if you want PUSH. that's been my experience anyway.

I think you are getting confused. There are 2 settings that affect (or you assume would affect gmail push)

1) always-on-mobile data DOES NOT affect gmail push etc.

2)accounts-sync---> background data DOES affect gmail push/gvoice texts/etc.

So you if disable the always-on-mobile data but still have background data on you will still get the emails and gvoice texts right away.

I hope that clarifies it for you.


eidt: Also, for those of you that are killing applications that are loaded into memory, you are wrong and you shouldnt be. Android OS (linux) use memory completely different for your typical OS. I never kill anything unless it hangs and i get a solid 16hours + our of my phone and i use it constantly with text/internet/games.

Not getting confused, I know the difference between the two, I haven't touched background data, I'm talking about Always on Data exclusively.

I do not run any task killers.

Did you pay for Radio Time or did you find a free version. I still found it free for the Pre, but not in the Market. Also, does it let you stream Shoutcast streams?

Leaving "Always on mobile data" unchecked stopped push e-mail with the newest version of K-9 mail. Gmail works fine however, so I ditched K-9.

Yeah I really liked using it on the Pre too, especially since it was free...lol, but all of a sudden shoutcast disappeared.

I will probably pick it up, the one that using right now has it's wonky moments, and if it means that I can turn yet another battery draining option off, then why not!

Well, is there really a difference with battery life having that enabled/disabled. Personally, i didn't notice much difference, but that could have been a result of other apps.

What are you turning off when you turn off the always on data? I know this may be a stupid question, but I am new to android and just wanna make sure I got this straight.

And where is the option to turn it off? I know I saw it in the past, but I can not find it now.

I had to turn always-on mobile data back on ... various network apps would just stop updating, including email. People turn the option off because they think it save a lot of battery ... no, it just causes $battery_draining_app to pause when the mobile data stops.
