Email Memory Usage

I was trying to free up internal memory and using the DiskUsage app I could see that my mail was using 160MB for data (not cache - I also cache attachments to external storage). I went through and cleaned out the mail, deleting old msgs, etc. until there was only a relatively small amount left (including the Sent, Drafts, and Outbox folders and I emptied the Trash folder). I also deleted them from the server itself (Comcast POP3). Even doing a restart doesn't free any memory up, though. The only way I was able to was to delete all data, which has the unfortunate side effect of deleting your email account settings.

Am I missing something?
